| How tough is it to fly in the rain. And how is the view from the canopy. Are you movin to fast to notice at low altitude or are you so high up you dont contend with it?? |

So how is the forward visibility?
In the jets I fly, without wipers going viz is absolutely terrible.
Do you have bleed air over the canopy? |

It's a heck of a lot of fun in a Cessna 172... Don't know about the Viper...yet. Greatest satisfaction in a 172...is flying the ILS through the soup...then popping out right in front of the rwy with the needles crossed. Oh yeah!!

Salute all!
I believe that the rain effects are related to final approach speed and shape of the canopy.
I flew slow planes and fast planes. The fast ones didn't have any problems. Raindrops flew up and vis was good. A-37 and T-33 were not as neat, but we still didn't have any windshield wipers . A-7D had a air blower doofer that helped, as we had a very flat forward panel and our approach speed was about 130-140 knots (same as Viper, BTW).
The Viper had no problems at all. Canopy was a compound curve and raindrops just slid off easy as could be. A-37 canopy was also curved and I had no problems seeing stuff in torrential rain in 'nam or back in Louisiana (home of A-37 training outfits).
Once on the rollout, rain was more of a factor, but just look to the side and keep the jet from getting onto the grass.... duhhhh?
A little known fact about precip is that if you fly fast enough you won't ice up. No kidding, the stagnation temp keeps the liquid from actually freezing on your wings. Once you slow down, then the liquid adheres and in a few minutes you are in deep doo doo unless you have anti-icing gear on the wings.
Great thread for wannabes and new pilots in any plane. Keep those neat questions coming, folks.....................
P.S. Great to see some female pilots joining the fray here - Salute Jennifer!!!! |

420 true will melt ice.... About 330-340 indicated at medium altitude.... "hey the canopy's actually warm..."

Hey there gums! *salute* Nice to be here...I'm still a newbie in regards to the Viper...but I'm always open to learning new things...I am trying so dang hard to get myself into the Guard now during college...but I have zero luck I swear...was supposed to meet with the recruiter again today, truck crapped out...ugh. So we get to push this back even further...still can't sign until July 9th though...due to unsupportive parents.
Hard to think approach speed in the viper is about Vne in a Cessna 152. lol. |

Just small question on the side here, Gearupgal: Are you parents unsupportive because you want to fly or is it because you want to fly in the military? |
