| When "the suits" know that the bird becomes an operational weapon system, then the aircraft, missile, etc. is assigned a NATO reporting name. |

I think NATO coded the Su-34 as "Fullback". but then that begs the question: what's with the Su-47? It's nowhere near operational, and it seems that it's just a technology demonstrator--so why did they give it a name? |

| Probably because Russia changed its designation from S-37 to SU-47 and was seeking potential investors/buyers. Obviously, no luck so far. |

Just to maintain aviation cross referenced academic relevance here, there are 8 "firkins" in a gallon of ale, and there are 18 "butts" to a "firkin" which leaves open the possibilty of a bomber version.
If Sukhoi comes out with another fighter, it could conceivably be code named the "Foamy" or "Frothy".

It occurred to me that the PAK-FA will probably be code named the "Findme".

...or even "Fiction".
If it challenged a Raptor, it would most definitely be "Fini". |

5) Are NATO reporting names still given to Russian aircraft today? You know, along the lines of "Blackjack", "Flanker", "Condor", etc.? If the Sukhoi T-50 ever takes to the air, will it likely be given a NATO reporting name?
Yes, NATO still does assign codenames (the Su-47 is "Firkin"). I'd guess NATO would assign the codename sometime in the months following the T-50's flight.
Well this has to be a party jet, a Firkin is an old beer and wine measure about 10.5 Gallons of Beer or 84 Gallons of wine.
Nobody said that the English had to be consistent in the 15th century. |

How about the Navy refering to the IAI Kfirs they use at Top Gun as an F-21A Lion? |

| Once Northrop had the F-20 the Navy probably didn't want to use a lower number for something that was procured after the F-20 had its designation. |

More F-words for the potential NATO codename for the PAK-FA
In the “Never underestimate your opponent” column:
Freelance, Fearsome, Fadeout, Flashy & Future
In the “It will never make it to the merge” column:
Fragment, Flamer, Fumble, Fireball & Fizzle
Those foreign customers desiring the cheap, lightweight version will be given the “Finger”

Salute
great thread.
Today, with all the politically correct crapola, we would not have had the "Faggot" back in the Korean War. Heh heh.
BTW, the Kfir was "Young Lion" in Hebrew, wasn't it?
