Hello,
I just signed up here. I was seaching for some F-16 photos on google, and found this site.
My dream is to become a pilot in the USAF. I'm currently 16 and enrolled in an aviation magnet. If I complete everything I will graduate high school with my private pilots license. I'm going to take AFROTC when I go to college. I have glasses though. I hope it doesn't ruin my dream. But If I don't get the slot doesn't mean I'm going to quit everything. I'd be honored to serve my country's military anyway possible. I was wondering if someone could tell me about getting PRK surgery and the pilot slot process in ROTC.

Jeez, I was just browsing through your site, and you seem like a Falcon nut just like me - just... with glasses, too!
Unfortunately, I didn't have the option of an AFROTC in school. None at all. I sure hope that doesn't affect my ability to be *something* in the AF.
So, you're another guy who gets to show off his pilot's license at school while everyone else is flashing their driver's licenses? Wow! I'd have to say you're a pretty cool guy. I wish I had all those opportunities. I can't imagine a single way you could get turned down. Good luck!
By the way, check your glasses... wrong section |

Brian,
A good buddy of mine from ROTC had non-qualifying vision, went and got PRK, got his slot and just recieved a Viper last friday at his assignment night. So I'll tell you it is possible. I don't know the details, but you might want to write to a local AFROTC UAO (unit admissions officer) and see if they can dig up the vision requirements (i.e. how bad can your eyesight be and still qualify for PRK/pilot slot). Hopefully it's a possibility for you.
That'd be step one. Then just keep doing what your doing and work hard in college and you should have no problem getting a slot. Lemme know if you have any more ROTC/pilot slot/UPT/etc questions.
Best of luck! |

No way! That's so awesome.
Well there currently aren't any AFROTC unit's in Nevada. The first one is scheduled to open up here in Vegas in 2005. I guess I have to wait a while to ask. Or I could contact one out of state.
Man that just made me happy reading about your buddy. That is just so cool! |

| Yes, you can email any ROTC unit. They'll be glad to help. |

BDM-
I hear that PRK is still an option, but before you have the surgery find out what the vision limits are to be a pilot these days. When I applied you could have up to 20/60 or 20/80 (something like that) and still get a pilot slot. You may not have to spend your money and then worry about getting a PRK wavier.
If you are looking for a good school somewhat near Vegas, I recommend one of the San Diego area schools. I went to SDSU and they've got a great AFROTC Det there, and that is where I got my pilot slot. Go Aztecs!
If you want any contact info for the admissions people there, feel free to send me a message-
