I had an idea and was wondering if it would work.
I was wondering if it would be possible to build an aircraft which had pair of AESA or PESA radars mounted in canards instead of having a single radar in the nose? Could you fit radars of competitive power inside of an aircraft's canards? Of course, the canards couldn't be fully-mobile (as in the Eurofighter Typhoon) if you wanted to keep the radars on track during maneuvers. You might build non-moving canards (as seen in the IAI Kfir-C.2) or canards that only move at the trailing edge using control surfaces (as seen in the Saab Viggen).
Instead of mounting the radars where the centerline of the radar sweep is directly forward, you could mount each radar at a 45 degree angle to the aircraft's centerline in order to increase the overall radar spread of the beams. The overlap between the two beam spreads would eliminate a potential blindspot directly in front of the aircraft. Since there isn't a radar in the nose, you could move the canopy forward or simply enlarge it in order to allow for enhanced forward viewing (such as for landing purposes). |

Why not just mount cheek arrays, ala F-22, and get the same result without giving up canard performance and lack of canard space?
If you only want 2 radars, then mount two arrays in the nose in an arrow "^" shape. |

IIRC, the General Dynamics design for the ATF competition had a similar setup. I'm trying to find the source.
EDIT:Okay, it had a nose array, too, but it appears to put more emphasis on the cheeks than in the F-22. http://books.google.com/books?id=uCI5Kh ... lt#PPP1,M1 |

Nose would have had an IRST on the GD design so I've read. |
