From airliners.net (no authorship provided). First of the ex-Northwest 747-400s decked out in Delta livery. Fresh outta the paint barn at Victorville.

I'm curious tho why the number on the NLG door and tail dosen't match the reg. number on the empennage(?)

No need. The number on the door and tail is "6305" but the reg is "N665US". Usually these numbers match, which struck me as odd.

BTW: If ya use Firefox, right-click on the image and select "View Image" for a larger version.

The number on the door & tail is the "ship number" and may not necessarily be the same as any numbers in the "N" number. Sometimes they do match, however.

The aircraft logbooks are identified and controlled by ship number. They're coded by fleet type, i.e. "3"062 is a 737, & evidently from the pics "6" is the code for 747-400's (6035).

regards, OL
