Didn't those SAC FB versions have bigger wings/wing spans as well, if I remember correctly?

Yes they did, they had an extra flap and slat on each wing. added approx. 8 more feet of wingspan if memory serves me correctly.

Also Mr. Stoli,
I was stationed there at Pease in the late 70's and crewed one of those magnificent beasts. (64-246)
They were a maint. nightmare, but you had to love the sleek lines of that ol'girl. I also loved that area of they country.

FB-111A bolt-on extended wing tips were the same as the F-111B (Navy) and F-111C (Australia).

It's been a while since I was able to crawl around inside a BONE, but I do not recall any kind of locking mechanism on any of the windows allowing them to be opened, even the 2 OSO/DSO station portals.

This pic has a close up of the outside of the windows (and the cutie on the other side of it) and there's no cut lines for a moveable window.

There was actually a guy from that crowd of photographers who posted up on rec.aviation.military (I think. It's been a while -2001 or so). His story was frickin' priceless. Laughing Laughing Laughing

edit: I guess it wasn't on r.a.m. Lots of chatter there but that's it. Sad

Saw my first real Air Show there in it's entirety back in 1989- all that and surrounded by FB-111s to boot! Cool

What a fantastic video Not Worthy
I didn't realise pilots were allowed to actually roll the B-1. I guess whoever was flying must have had a huge silly grin on their face and cherished the waiver.

No need for a waiver. If you have to get tactical, then you do what you have to do, as long as it is within the Regs and aircraft limitations.

If anything, demo flights can be more restrictive on what can be done, as one has to consider many close bystanders.

Granted, aerobatics over the airfield is not normally allowed, except during approved demonstration flights, but every maneuver that is performed by the crew has to be planned, and submitted for approval beforehand.

Ah, I see. I understand that sometimes there are limitations on aircraft, such as not doing more than one 360 degree roll in a single manoeuvre. I was thinking perhaps the B-1b had limitations preventing inverted flight. Anyway it was great and I'm impressed with the roll rate generated also.

Waddington International Airshow 2000; the Bone pilots rolled the bird and over-stressed the airframe, I understand when she returned stateside she never flew again!

I am, however, convinced that the BONE has a feature to open those windows while on the ground. I'll dig a little deeper and find the scoop on that.

Naw, those windows are bolted on. They don't have an option to open like C-17 or other heavies.

I'm surprised to actually see a pic of the FWD cockpit. Usually during airshow, the pilots don't like people taking pics. Sometimes, we just keep the crew entry door closed. On the other hand, that cockpit is pretty tight. Trying to hop in the seat without kicking the eject handle or without your head hitting the switches is a pain. I can't wait until they go to the glass cockpits (whenever that will be), those engine instrumentation tapes are pretty old. I like the gauges. lol

Yeah, I looked back in my book about the BONE, and figured out that those windows don't retract. My bad. I was just smoking crack again.

Do the escape hatches open and close, or are they only set to jettison? BTW, if you deploy any of the 4 FEDS hatches on the C-17 (located at the top of the cargo compartment), you just bought yourself a $218 million dollar airframe!

As a last resort for an fire emegency during an engine run, you can actually manually open the top hatches so you can throw the rope out and slide down. In the front, they really want you to slide down the nose, forget that!! I am not sure about accidentally blowing them, but I know it you open them for any other reason other than a fire, Egress has to come out to close them due to rigging and other stuff, and you got a whole lot of explaining to do!
