Seems like the squadron jets are almost always sent, so thus are more exposed to that risk. Superstitions come out of this type of thing.

554, too bad. I remember when it first got to Shaw, had that new car smell still. Was a Demo bird for a while. I've heard what happened from a guy I know who works at a GE plant, but not gonna say for now of course. I aint getting into trouble.

Kind of an Ironic picture I found in the database, both a/c have either crashed or been written off...

USAF F-16C block 50 #93-0554 of the 78th FS parked at Elmira, New York.

Or maybe they could be the same aircraft? There will not be 2 aircraft with the same serial #

I believe he is talking about the two aircraft visable in the photo 91-0469 which you can just see the tail and 93-0554. Also both with the 78th FS and then lost with the 55th.

You are absolute right, nam11b! But in this special case, at least at first I would not violate any copyrights of this awesome private shot. Tomorrow, I will join militaryphotos.net, and I will try to ask the photographer via PM for permission to post this very hot picture on F-16.net.

Engine debris caused F-16 crash at Balad

The runway crash of an F-16 Fighting Falcon at Joint Base Balad in Iraq last November was caused by an engine fire that started when a piece of debris punctured a fuel tank, according to an Air Combat Command investigation released Monday.

[...]

The board concluded that a 12-inch section of the engine’s second stage fan disk broke loose as Ashcroft accelerated the engine and moved the throttle to afterburner. The debris punctured a fuel tank and a hydraulic line, starting a fire as the jet rolled down the runway.

Engines NEVER survive a disk failure; quite often the airframe is lost too!

With the Viper's fuel system surrounding a good portion of the upper font half of the engine I guess it had a 50/50 chance of going out through the fuel cell... (IE - resulting fire consuming the aircraft)

Good thing it happened during the take-off roll, and not after lift-off.... Shocked

Hats off to Capt Ashcroft for riding the thing out! Cheers

Keep 'em flyin' Thumb

I know there are other "disk failures" out there, but these two came to memory rather quickly.

Commercial or military, the "uncontained " failure of an engine's disk (fan, compressor, or turbine) is "catastrophic" any way you look at it... Shocked
