Here we go again. First of all in any BFM arena a Rhino is a much better A/C than a Tom.
Call me
old but wasn't 'Rhino' another nick-name for a Phantom?
Guess the USN is as bad with new names as the USAF? (ala - Lightening II, Thunderbold II or Globemaster III?)

PW vs GE? No contest. GE has been prefered over Pratt in the Viper and Tom. Compressor stalls suck.
Yes the TF30s were well known for compressor stalls in the Tom' and 'Vark. Early F100s weren't much better either. The later models of the F100 with the computerized controls like the F110 have done away with stalls. If a PW stalls now, there is typically something wrong engine control/monitoring system and requires maintenance. Most new Viper sales have been PW-229s over the last few years... Pratts have a better safety record too!
Lets not forget some of the F404s for a time in the Hornets were made by PW when the Navy was mad at GE...

Its funny that most complaints about the airplane come from people that dont / havent flown the Rhino. Instead of talking smack about it, try asking someone who actually flies the plane. Personally, I love it.
I wasn't getting at that, but some of the inflated claims of GE concerning the F414's performance increases over the F404, and how Congress keeps demanding "engine competition" for the Lightening II when the Navy/GE snuck the Bug under the radar... I don't think the Navy got what Boeing/GE was promising, but having the Super Bug will help the Navy get through to the next aircraft, something the USAF decided not to even try!?!
Keep 'em flyin'
