Anyone else remember this one?

It was a tv show back in 84-85, set in the early '60s, with Craig T. Nelson as an AF O-6, and test pilot at Edwards. Great show, from what I recall (was a small yoot at the time), with lots of good flying scenes. Seems to be way overdue for a DVD release.

Oh yeah, and two words for you...Elisabeth Shue! Cool

So, anyone else remember it? Thoughts on it? Better yet, does anyone know if/when Paramount will release the DVDs? If so, was it worth the buy? ABC had some pretty good tv dramas back then, so that's telling me that maybe it would.

I'm surprised it hasn't been already, but then it had a limited audience and a fairly short run if I recall.

"There I was": At Test Pilot School, each graduating class gets to pick a distinguished graduate and a guest speaker. While in the junior class, our Senior class picked Chuck Yeager as the DG and Craig T. Nelson ("Raynor Sarnac") as the guest speaker. Yeager was a waste (nobody at Edwards liked him), but CTN was an absolute hoot. He was given a Viper ride earlier in the day that experienced a dual FCS failure. They were as far from the field as they could be and still be in Eddie's airspace, so at 180 kts (apparently the speed to fly in that situation) it was a long (and in CTN's words) harrowing trip back. It really wasn't a huge deal, but he played it up during his speech as death-defying. In "Call to Glory" he was serious, but in "Coach" he was hysterical....the latter side came out.

PS: The guy is really tall, and his wife was a Babe

I actually remember Craig speaking of this incident on a Discovery or TLC documentary about stuff that goes fast, i.e., powerboats, race cars, airplanes, etc...of which he is actually a big connoisseur (owns a plane and a jet boat). Would've liked to have heard the humorous version of it, though.

Yeah, I'd like to see the DVD get greenlighted. It wouldn't be the first DVD set of a tv show from the 80s that only ran one season. And again, I seem to recall it being a good show, but then again, considering my age at the time, I thought The A-Team and Knight Rider (the 'Hoff version) were quality television too. However, It's been said that the flying scenes and the drama were much more realistic than JAG (not like that was really difficult to surpass), so that's a plus.

I've always been in love with Elisabeth Shue as well, so that's another plus.

I just don't want to chuck $100 down the toilet to end up being let down...like I should've let a sleeping dog from my childhood lie, you know?

As an aside, you aren't the first person that I've seen or heard say that Chuck Yeager is kind of an a-hole. Pop's old boss told me that he was one of the best sticks he ever flew with, but he just lacked the..."people skills", so to speak.

Supercarrier was released on DVD. I saw it on the shelves at the Lackland BX last year, and cringed as soon as I saw the title on the box.

Seriously though, if "Call to Glory" is mentioned in the same breath as "Supercarrier", should I cringe over Call to Glory too? I'd really like to see it again, but I'd just hate to be disappointed in crapola acting, or blatantly fake military stuff, you know?

Then again, I do have The Final Countdown on DVD. Was it better than that, at least? If I did purchase the DVDs, would my dinner back up on me upon viewing? Laughing

Anything that has "Paint it Black" as the theme song, automatically qualifies as cool in my book. Cool

As for "SuperCarrier"? Well, if you want some quality Ronny Cox acting, I'd suggest you use your money wisely and buy part one of "Beverly Hills Cop" instead.

All I really want to know, though, is if I spend $100 to buy Call to Glory, would I wind up crying?...crying because I blew my money, that is?

So, anybody have an opinion on this? I know Roscoe, Habu, Craig T. Nelson, and myself weren't the only 4 people in history that ever watched this show! Laughing

Interesting tidbit though....did you ever watch the early episodes of TOD? Paint It Black didn't become the theme song until the end of the first/beginning of the second season. At first it was just an instrumental ditty. I tracked it down and I have it on my iPod Smile

Yeah, ABC did the same thing with "China Beach"...for a few episodes, they replaced The Supremes' "Reflections" with a cover version of "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place".

Sometimes the original theme songs of shows should not be Effed with. In TOD's case, "Paint it Black" was a welcome change.

I can dig that. Truf that PIB was a better theme song. Every time I hear it, I get visions of Hueys over the jungle in my head.

That definitely would've taken on a new meaning if I had been Mr. Miyagi...at least in Ali's case, anyway. Laughing
