Looks like I am headed to Eglin tomorrow, and will be there until Sunday afternoon. Hopefully we are not flying at all while we are there, so there should be plenty of time for fun. I have not been to Eglin overnight in about 10 years, so what are the hot spots close to Eglin. We will have a rental car so the rules on where we can take a blue steely are of no concern. Saturday night we need to find a sports bar that will have ESPN on, but other than that the rest the time we will be looking for some of the more shady areas to visit. I really have no clue what our mission is at Eglin this weekend, all I know was that I signed up for a 3 day trip to Florida, so we will see what it is once we get there I guess. Thanks

Elliboom, go to Fudpuckers, or The Hog's Breath. They're both in Destin, so you're looking at about a 15 minute drive or so. There's also a Hard Rock in Destin. Enjoy the Emerald Coast, and have a Red Stripe with Lime for me! Beer

Try the grilled amberjack at the seafood restaurant of your choice. Got to hit a beach. Best sand in the world.

You also want to go to the boardwalk on the island, thats where the swamp is and a few other good hot spots. Also AJ's is good. Any seafood resteraunt will work, amberjack or grouper are my favorites. You can also rent a pontoon boat and spend an afternoon on crab island, Recommend the weekend as it will be filled up. There are tons of things to do here, the beaches are probably the best you will see, even after the hurricane season they still are in great shape. The hard rock is over at Destin Commons, also try the whales tale down on the beach, its a good little beach bar. Have a great time while you are here.

If you've never been, it's definitely worth the short drive....

Are you guys kidding me!!! Museums, Hogs Breath (that place went down hill after the move to Destin) Fudruckers!!????, Guys, guys, guys......Have you forgotten about "the Green Frog", the "Matador", ah yes, fine establishments! The Swamp is a great place, nice staff. They had a couple of idiot "security" guys (read: too dumb to be bartenders!) that put a damper on a few nights of a TDY, but they were terminated quickly!

Oh man, forgot the Green Frog. Yeah, that was a good place. PudF*ckers (as I prefer to call it), and The Hog's Breath were still pretty kicking places about 5 or 6 years ago, which was the last time I've probably been there. I didn't even bother mentioning the beach, because if you come to NW Florida, and you're within 10 minutes of the beach, and don't go...you're a "DE-DE-DE!!!"

"Security" = D@uchebag with an IQ the same as his shoe size. At least that's how it is back home on Panama City Beach.

Is the Matadore still in Niceville???

... not that I've ever been there, you understand.....

When I was stationed at Eglin back in '86 - '87 Destin was nothing but beaches, there used to be great fishing of of the breakwater that came out right by the river....

Oh boy Sammy's and The Matador...great "family" establishments, staffed by Nuns, and Kindergarten teachers. Laughing

Man what a rough weekend. Destin was having some kind of seafood festival, which actually meant that drinks were double the price. We stayed in some crap hole hotel that my co-pilot found on Priceline, but we had a nice car, and spent most of the day on the beach, and the entire night at the bars. AJ's sucked, no decent scenery and it was 6 bucks for a small mixed drink. The swamp was cool, except they threatened to tow our rental car if we left it there overnight. I guess they would rather us drive it back to the hotel drunk, then leave it there and call a cab. So we stuffed it in the back of the parking lot and took our chances. All in all it was a great 3 days of TDY with nothing official to do.

In my best William Shatner voice:

Yeah, I've been snowed by Priceline before too. Thanks Bill!

Glad enjoyed your weekend of no flying and decent per diem on the Emerald Coast.

What? No Hog's Breath?

For what its worth, I've had great luck with priceline. I don't dare try it to book airfare, but I have used it for hotels with good results.
