I've been wondering, how is the canopy opened from the outside? And are the canopies usually left open when parked at the ramp? Thanks!

I) There is a switch inside a panel.
II) Depends on the weather.

I'm guessing they're closed in a blizzard? Very Happy Where is the panel located? Near the boarding ladder? (By the way, do F-16's have internal boarding ladders?) Thanks! (I'm pretty oblivious to anything that happens outside of the cockpit.) Smile

It's located in a access panel in the LH strake, you can connect external cooling air in that panel too and no there is no boarding ladder. Or you can manually crank it open if you feel like burning some calories. Laughing

But to steal one you still have to get past the airmen and their M16s. Very Happy

In a blizzard, at least at my base, our jets are parked in hangars out of the weather. Wink We also close the canopies in rain or high winds (+30kts)...or when we put them to bed for the night.

Yep, you'd need the jet keys along with the correct unlock code and login info for the onboard computers Razz

You guys still use the code? We moved on to a fingerprint and iris scanner. Seems like after a night on the town most pilots forgot their codes so this is easier. Laughing

Yeah, and they just changed the login code to be 24 characters long with a mix of upper/lower case letters, numbers, and special characters that will be changed every three months. There will be yearly CBT on this too.

Man!
When I first saw this thread I thought to myself "did they actually get a hold of footage with someone pullin on the canopy jettison rip cord(under the 'rescue' access panel)?!" That would've been crazy. Actually reminds me of a story; my buddy Z had just got on the wing jet and long story short canopy wasn't opening for nothing pilot inside and everything. Finally they got to the last step of the FI which was to blow the canopy...of course super wasnt having that and luckily they somehow got it to crank from under a panel. I wonder if what they say is true; "does the canopy really blow off to the left?"
