PhillyGuy,
Absolutely, OL.. preparation for a 'conventional projection', against any potential peer is a good concept. I think PhillyG would concur with that 100%?

Of course. Even if seen unnecessary at the moment there is always a possibility that something unforeseen will hapeen in the conventional/nation state level that will involve us. And knowing our policies we most likely will be. I just think that it's more than a little wrong to bet an entire country and at the same time think that history cannot repeat itself.

What makes you think either would be more determined to cut additional Raptors which is a system in service already compared cutting some F-35s?

Despite his hype machine Obama does not seem to be any sort of moderate. I bet he would easily cave to his ultra-liberal supporters and hurt our country in the process. McCain is not going to cause the US to collapse like the USSR. Bush's tax cuts, while I am not fond of them, are hardly the problem here.

As it stands right now the F-22 is very unlikely to be exported or produced much passed the projected 183 examples. Right now the F-35 is at the stage of chicken before the egg or the egg before the chicken. Basically, the F-35 needs to get early production numbers up and rolling to bring down th unit price. So, a small increase in Raptor productions would cost Billions more and add little to the defense of the US. So, many believe the money would be better spent on getting F-35 production up and running. Which, is in the interests of the US Goverment and its Allies. This is why to your see any support from Gates and other High Ranking Defense Officals.
