I will be in Oman next month with Dyncorp and was wondering if there is internet available. I am in school online and need to continue. Anyone know what to expect? I heard that there is a wait to get internet in your room. How long?

The couple of times that I flew into Thumrait, I had my laptop with me and was able to ping off an internet signal over on, what was then, the British side of the base. Not sure if that was something the Brits had set up, or if it was base-wide. Hope this helps you.

Anyone flying into Thumrait is ordered - yes General - to take pictures of the Omani vipers.
Hoping we can ever get those two missing ones in our gallery.

Greets,

Would love to have been able to accomodate you Bjorn, unfortunately, I was a member of the very last USAF aircrew to fly into Thumrait. The Brits closed down their C-17 stage a couple of days later, so I was there to help them move some of their stuff out. The airlift side of the ramp, which belonged to the Brits, was on the other side of the airfiled from the Omani fighter ramp, so all you could really see until we taxied out was the sun shields.

However, any contractors out there, please take some pics! It'd be great to see a little bit of Thumrait again!

Internet is available in your room, but it is a pain getting it setup. When I was there, the wait was long for installation and the dial up was aggravating. My suggestion is to get signed up for DSL and then go to downtown Salalah and buy the Narwas wireless pack. Speeds are decent (>100k) and you can use it anywhere. It works over the GSM network and you either need a PCMIA card or a USB adapter. Hope that helps. Enjoy Oman, the beaches are a blast!
