I've seen a lot of talk here and there about how BVR combat is far more relevant than WVR these days. I guess that assertion does make sense because one must pass through BVR to actually get to WVR.
The standard strategy seems to be: "detect enemy in BVR" -> "fire a missile or two before they get close". This seems to be what makes the F-22 so theoretically effective.
Now what about countermeasures like chaff, flares, etc.? How effective are such measures if you can actually detect a missile coming your way from BVR? Countermeasures must have some effectiveness, otherwise they wouldn't be put on aircraft. Surely it would make a difference on what kind of missile is headed your way (AMRAAM, R-77, etc.) as well?
Would I be correct in assuming that you are more likely to evade a missile the sooner you detect it? Do countermeasures make WVR combat a non-insignificant possibility even in this modern era of stealth? |

OPSEC!
Sorry Kryptid, but discussing how and when we pop flares, or why is classified, at minimum Secret/NOFORN.
Moderators, could we lock this one up? |
