Looking for which F-16 units have flown with the TARS pod for a modeling project. Better if they used it in OIF/OEF.
Thanks

You must also add
114FW 175FS
132FW 124FS
170FW 183FS
I also believe - although not sure - that the following units have used it:
150FW 188FS
148FW 179FS
I'm not sure where you got those figures from but the original ANG TARS units were:
127FW
192FW
113FW
114FW
122FW
181FW
Now any block 25/30/32 aircraft can fly TARS.

The 158th FW/VT ANG also used the TARS when last deployed in OIF with the 122nd FW. To my surprise! |

Thanks everyone for all the information. Looking for a good current scheme for a Block 30 with the pod. Sounds like DC or Vermont are good choices.

The FIRST unit to fly the TARS pod and the "Richmond Recce" pod and "EO1" was the 192 FW VaANG. We were the developmental unit for the F-16 reconnaissance pod.
However, we are out of the F-16 business now. |

| The 301st FW has trained with them prior to AEF deployment, and I believe that the unit has used them in AOR. |

Crazy (and surely ignorant) question, and sorry if it's been discussed before, but would it be feasible at all to attach an AIM-9 launcher to the Viper's intake (5L, 5R) hard points? Kind of like the A-7 side-launched sidewinders?
It just seems like a logical hard-point if it would work. Even if it was just 1 extra round for self-defense combined with a pod on the other point. |

not a chance. if you look at other aircraft that have intake mounted missile rails, you would notice that they are CART activated ejector mount, ie... F-15.
this is done to eliminate to possibility of the intake injesting the exhaust plume of the missile. this plume can cause the engine to flame out.
with 5R and 5L being where they are, it isn't feasible or wise to put a missile that close to the intake. on top of that, the AIM-9B thru P has to be fired from the rail. its design does not allow for an ejected launch. the AIM-9X, i am pretty sure is only rail launched, but i am not 100% on that. |
