Hi everybody,

I live in Anchorage, Alaska, where we've had an operational squadron of F-22's since 2007. After seeing the flight demo of the Raptor at this summer's air show, I was inspired to finally do this one in 3D/CAD. It will probably be a 6-month project, but will be more accurate than the 3D models of the F-22 that I've seen so far.

If you'd like to follow along, the article is at http://www.mikejamesmedia.com/f_22_01_intro.html.

Enjoy!

Wow, that's a heck of a goalset you've got there, I'm more of a "cheat and use textures" kind 'o' guy, myself.

Looking great, awesome detail!

Hi Mike,

You're doing a great job so far, keep up the good work and the research! I personally would like to do an F-22 sim (I'm studying computer engineering) but I think I will have to wait until I finish so I can concentrate on the project. There are so many things I'd like to do... I've asked all over for a recent F-22 specific sim and there is absolutely NONE. Frustrating, but hopefully it won't be that way for long.
Again, keep up the good work!

Hi everybody,

Progress on the model is going well, and today, I posted an update, including an animation with all the control surfaces moving. It's at http://www.mikejamesmedia.com/f_22_edits_07.html

Enjoy! (I am.)

I was reading in Computer Graphics World that for the 1st Hulk movie (the one with Eric Bana) the studio that did the the effects (don't recall who at the moment) actually got the genuine OML for the F-22 from Lockheed Martin. Don't know if it's BS or not (it's not impossible, Northrop Grumman worked on the two designs in the movie "Stealth").

very nice!

Careful Russia Might come knocking on your door for a copy if you get it any closer to spot on.

Few Minor things to touch up still, but I look at these jets all day!

I also lack the time, and patients required to do that!

Hi everybody,

The overall shape of the aircraft is getting close now, aside from the wing/fuselage joint, which is ongoing. So, I'm starting to add "boolean cutters", which will be used to create many of the doors and vents that are visible on the exterior.

Latest updates are at http://www.mikejamesmedia.com/f_22_edits_10.html and it's looking better all the time.

Take care!

It would be great if this model format is compatible with Flightgear. I'm currently working on a flight model for it.

What format does Flightgear use?

honestly don't know. I know nothing about 3-d modelling really. I'm more into the flight / controls modelling.

Hi everybody,

With the exterior shape very close to final. I've made a large number of boolean cuts, which create many of the doors and vents that are visible on the exterior. (Images here were made just after the cuts... Later, the doors will be appropriately colored, textured, and animated.)

Latest updates are at http://www.mikejamesmedia.com/f_22_edits_12.html and i'm happy with the results so far.

Take care!

wow this project of yours is turning out great! I'm not so good at building 3D stuff but I'm working on an F-86 sabre.
