Is it still 10 years, or has it been changed. Heard rumors it's 12 years now.

Wow, this will sound bad but if you can't make it in less then 10 something isn't right. What does everyone else think?

Wasn't it 10 HYT for E-4 Sgt? (Even further back?) Which meant you had to move from E-4 SrA to Sgt PRIOR to 10?

So now there is one LESS step involved with promotion to E-5 SSgt, and now you have 12 years to do it?

No wonder they're bragging about 70% FMC rates!?! Maybe someone should be concentrating on the enlisted force training and retention. Seems more important than new uniforms every administration, or 'fit-to-fight' scores?

"Yeah SrA Snuffy looks sharp in his new ABUs with the suade boots, and he scored 92 on his fit test; but after taking 8 years to get his 5 level, I hope he makes SSgt this enlistment..."

Is there even such a thing as a "4 year wonder" anymore? Which, back then, was SSgt in the first 4 year enlistment. One could enter as a A1C, then make Sra "Below the Zone", then test to SSgt on the first cycle? Then again back then some of us were 5-levels as E-3 after a week of FTD and 6 months of OJT!

Sgt went away around 93. I worked with a guy in Holloman that put staff on in about 3 1/2 years. That was around 96. Thanks for the help.

4 year wonder is average if not the norm now days. Anyone who doesn't make staff within 8 years now days is either a giant fuckup or is trying really hard NOT to make rank.

According to AFI36-3208, HYT for an E-4 is 12 years, though there are certain unique circumstances that may bump it up beyond that. Pretty rare though.

Talk about "four year wonders"...I entered service on 18 Feb 1982. I got two stripes out of Basic Training for enlisting for six years, made SrA BTZ first time, made SSgt first time, made TSgt first time...sewed on TSgt on 01 July 1988. Six years, two weeks, sixteen days. Unfortunately, I stalled there and was not selected for E-7 until 1998. Oh well.

Best Regards,

Don't feel bad Joe, I stalled at Staff. However I was always proud to say my DOR for Staff, Tech, and Master were all 1 Dec......Easy to remember.
