Props to Gizmodo for having a bunch of photos and a HI-RES production flow chart.
Check it out.

AA-1 is being weighed (20,975 lbs.) here on Jan 8th 2006, right before it is moved to its new location in preparation for control surface testing and engine fit checks. |

Wonder no longer. From the article:
Quote:
If you want to have your own F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, look no further because Stephen Trimble—from the always-good The Dew Line—has sent us high resolution instructions showing Lockheed Martin's construction process.

Was going to post this the other day but didn't find it particularly interesting, as a non-engineer. I remember seeing those same kind of charts early in the F-16 program. The F-35 seems an awful lot more complex... |

This just highlights the beauty of the F-35 Design. As no other aircraft will be able to mix and match components like the Lightning........ |

The neat thing is that the same chart for the STOVL and CV variants is nearly identical. One factory line, one set of tooling, one set of trained assemblers, and three different aircraft. Affordability is not just a buzz word on this program. |

| LMAggie, you are getting to be one of the "old guys" on this site, 256 posts already. Take a look at the next post on the DEW Line it illustrates the tanker contract process very well |

I think I'm getting crankier in my "old" age. And yes, that clip of the dog was hilarious. Perfect analogy. |
