Well, aren't you lucky that I have some, courtesy of my pal Barry Webb. Photos at that time are rare simply because we weren't allowed to have cameras on the flightline. Barry snapped these on weekend duty during an MLPRF modification. They show the "A-Frame" at the time the shelters were under construction. You can date them pretty well by the combination of OD fatigues and the "new" BDUs. Barry Webb notes the date as July 1988. Some of these photos were taken at a later time.
I too would love to see more photos. I will check with Barry and see if he has any more.

| Thanks for the pics. They are definately hard to find. I arrived in Misawa Jan 90 and most of those pics showed things that were already done when I arrived. Remember seeing very few of the old BDU's. I have some pics from the fuel shop where I was at and some from the line. I will try to get them on later. |

Wow, that brings back some memories. Yeah, I recall exercising at the A-frame, though short lived as we (the 14th) moved to the first 6 HAZs when they were built. Stuffing 4 jets per HAZ was a tight fit, but still better than stuffing the whole line into the hangar every weekend or during inclement weather!
Those are all 13th jets, any from the 14th?
Skippy, where you able to get out to the 13th or 14th flightlines? I have some photos I took before I left in 91, but it was of the late block 30s (Big Mouths) the 14th switched over too in late 90- early 91. I'll have to dig those up and scan them.
Come to think of it, I may have some photos of the 85 model 14th jets, from our TDY to Kadena for the Commando Fog exercise.

Those shots bring back some memories! 85-1513 was my incentive flight jet back in 1989, and I had the great luck to see it again at Carswell AFB a few years back. The Gunsmoke tail is a bonus shot...I was on that team from Misawa. We lost the maintenance competition by 1 point because an inspector spotted a minor infraction on a piece of test equipment. In addition to being the weapons accuracy guru for the team, I also ran Support section. The inspectors had already finished with us in Support, and it was the last day of scored launches. I instructed everybody NOT to bring any support equipment to the line unless it was needed. An engine troop who shall remain nameless took out the CEDS and threw it into the back of an open pickup. There was some tape on the download cable which was not secured by tie string, and an inspector nailed us for that, taking us out of the top spot. Everybody could have killed this guy.
All five of our jets were boresighted to exactly the same numbers (try that one today) and one of our pilots won best LALD with the spare, which he had only flown twice before!
Along with many others on this forum, I mourn the loss of Gunsmoke as the bombing competition that it was.
Best Regards, |
