I'm not really a rap fan much at all. There's songs I like more than actual artists or groups. That being said, if I absolutely had to come up with my personal Top 5 rappers, I'd go:
1. The Beastie Boys (Who'd have thought that 3 white, Jewish guys from Brooklyn would become one of the greatest selling rap groups in history?)
2. NWA (Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Easy E were the fathers of the Gangsta Rap movement)
3. Public Enemy (The first time rap had a real political statement behind it)
4. Snoop Dog (helped to bridge the gap between Gangsta and mainstream rap)
5. Eminem (before Marshall Mathers, other than The Beastie Boys, white rappers had generally been a joke. Vanilla Ice, anyone?)
I'd rate Tupac close behind, simply because he was more famous in death than he was alive.
*****************************************************************************************************************
I guess that tells me what an old fogey I'm turning into. I thought DYLAN was the man who wrote "All Along the Watchtower", "Hey Mr. Tamborine Man", "Positively 4th Street", "Lay Lady Lay", and of course, one of the greatest songs in the history of recorded music, "Like a Rolling Stone".
I will say to the kiddies out there, that if you think a "45" is something that you shoot, then you are in serious need of a musical education. |

I'm with ya there on all but Eminem--Can't STAND him.
5. Biggie Smalls and Tupac (heck, they're intertwined in history anyway)
I only listen to rap when I'm playing GTA:San Andreas, any other time, I can't stand it. |

Oh, of course. Eminem is a total d!ck, but I was rating my list simply by historical merit.
Who'd have thought that at one point in history, the number one golfer in the world would be black, and the number one rapper in the world would be white?
He's also one of only two rappers/rap groups who have won an Academy Award. He definitely deserves credit for nothing else but innovation. |

| Hold on a sec, I just looked at the guy that started this thread, he's only got two posts, and I'd guess his name's Dylan, I say he's an internet troll, and we should ignore this thread. |

1. Lil Wayne & Birdman - They're good together, not so much separately
2. Public Enemy
3. House of Pain - Gotta love a bunch of Irish rappers
4. Eminem - Angry, disgusting lyrics aside, his background music sounds pretty good
5. SugarHill Gang - reminder of the nineties: before rap became so arbitrarily aggressive |

I think of him as the 'roid-rage of rap; before he got PO'ed about.....everything, rap was not completely about bustin caps. (see previous post)
After him, rappers, in general, went nuts |

Nas, Rakim, Pac, Biggie and Jay... in no particular order.
But they can't compare with these guys.
