Has anyone heard anything about this new Maverick variant? The following was from a press release:
Raytheon Pursues LOAL Maverick With Initial Air Force Contract
Defense Daily 05/19/04
Raytheon [RTN] is moving forward with a Lock-On-After-Launch (LOAL) version of its long-serving AGM-65 Maverick air-to-surface missile that would dramatically improve the performance of the weapon following a $5.3 million Air Force award to conduct a utility evaluation.
The LOAL Maverick would incorporate GPS/INS technology, a datalink and an Ultra High Frequency (UHF) network radio that takes advantage of a gateway between aircraft equipped with the Situational Awareness Datalink (SADL) system and Link 16 system, Michael Vela, Maverick development program manager, told Defense Daily recently in a telephone interview.
Eventually, the LOAL Maverick would also include a more powerful battery and more hydraulic fluid for actuator control, innovations that could push the Maverick's range to beyond 20 nautical miles, according to Vela. "It's a quantum increase in range," Vela said.
The utility evaluation involves a series of up to six captive-carry flight tests at Eglin AFB, Fla., according to a Raytheon statement. Vela said the flight tests would begin in the first quarter of 2005. An Air Force decision to move to live testing would follow those captive carry tests, he added.
Interest in the LOAL Maverick also includes international Maverick operators, Vela said. If the Air Force does not opt to fund LOAL Maverick, a foreign operator may come forward at some point, he added. |

Habu, I know there is a lot of work to improve Mavericks, the missile has proved very valuable over the years. Here is a link to the fact sheet on the missile, including commetns on the LOAL.

| That would be a cool Mod to existing missiles. And could make an interesting bridge until the JCM ( Joint Common Missile ) takes over from Maverick and Hellfire. |
