I'm intrigued by highly asymmetrical aerial combat. If you go by the whole "speed is life" thing then the F-16 has this match wrapped up.
However, speed can't be the whole story in a fight. I mean, I'm sure there's some point where you'd rather not be going too fast when you're trying to turn. Dogfighting at Mach 2 doesn't sound practical. So how fast is "fast enough"? Hasn't it been stated somewhere on this board before that the majority of WVR engagements have historically taken place around 600-800 mph (for jets, I assume)? I can't remember the exact numbers. |

Fun Game! I once did P-39 vs Me-262, one shot with the 37mm to the wing root was all she wrote. Also did an unarmed Il-2 (didn't know you needed pods to have weapons) vs Eric Hartman in Me-109. I slammed my wing through his cockpit and ejected. |

| the extra would get bounced easily. F-16 only has to go vertical to win. |

Oh, boy, that is a good one.
Let him go vertical. What is there? The moon?
I am happily zapping around at 180kts, 30 - 100 ft AGL.
Where does he climb for?
High altitude navigation?
If he wants me, he can come down. ( And he can not.... that is the point).
If he coms down ... at speed.... he'll need a hell off a lot of altitude for a pull up before hittng the dust. (speed, altitude, dive angle, means distance out, it is a gamble to survive, (for him))
If he comes in slow, he has too many alfa to point his gun (or laser) and. . . looses maneuvring energy.
And for some other pilots, sorry, I do not play games.
Vertical? Well, vertical down he has one chance, but he'd better be ready for the go-go seat. He"ll never be able to pull up and out of it.
Vertical up? Byby baby, see you next time.
But do not dare to come into my area again. |

Apples and oranges...
no comparison between a racer and a combat aircraft. Playing tag is one thing, playing for keeps is another. Anyone willing to bet against the F-16 in something remotely realistic with the Extra 300 in respects to combat situations is deeply deluded. |

vilters, you should get a job or ask your mom for a larger allowance. Then you could afford to buy some stuff and quit smoking the drapes.

| If the prop plane would beat the jet, don't you think the USAF would be flying those into combat instead of F-16s? |

Vilters is a funny guy . Seriously though, are we talking guns only? Even if its guns only, good luck with the extra 300 trying to get guns kill on an F 16. The Viper can go to burners and climb fast (noise high baby) if the pilot manages to screw the pooch in the dogfight. Good luck trying to climb with an 180 knot crop duster . If this was a real world scenario the 180 knot low flying Extra 300 will eating an AMRAAM face first! |

| a high volume of high velocity high explosive 20mm rounds vs low volume lower velocity 7.62 ball ammo. Even the Brits back in WWII realized the 7.62 was too small of a round and switched to 20mm |
