Dear Goose
What you see in the Academy kit instructions is a GPU-5 Pave Claw 30mm gun pod. The only unit to use this weapon operationally, I'm pretty sure, was the New York Air National Guard in Iraq. It wasn't very successful so they reverted to other weapons.
I don't think it would be accurate to use the pod on your kit with any of the decal options supplied. If you are building F-16s, you should grab yourself a copy of Jake Melampy's superb book on ANG F-16s. Besides being crammed with lovely photos of F-16s, you also get to see many weapons loads - both from peacetime and from in the Gulf.
I have also seen the GPU-5 hanging from ANG A-7s when they were in service, and I think they were from Ohio ANG.
Hope this helps.

Anotehr options would to build the Eglin F-16A 80-609 (AD), which was the primary Test Viper for the 30mm Gun Pod. I'm actually building one for a friend who crewed that jet in the mid-late 80s.
BTW, the Gun Pod in the Acdemy kit is quite inaccurate.

If you didnt ask this question, i wouldnt know whats that part either..cos i have 2 sets of them from my F-16A and the F-16C Razorback from Academy. Rubbish kits, i made both of them to try trash it out before i move on my Hasegawa kits.
Though, the new 1/72 Academy Vipers are worth the money. I myself bought a kit and am quite impress |

Yeah, the Academy 48th F-16s have a lot of problems and just do not stack up to the Hasegawa kits.
The 72nd Academy, well, I would not go as far to say it's worth the money, especially knowing it's a blind scale down of their 32nd scale botched F-16CG/CJ kit. The intakes, exhaust, vertical tail dorsal, wheels, gear doors, and nose are just as wrong as they are in 32nd scale.
