Kidding aside, you can "sustain speed" at any altitude; You can hold 50kts at 0 altitude without 'burner. Given a long enough paved surface.

Or if you're flying you can "sustain speed" at all altitudes up to ~50K' provided the engine isn't ingesting dirt, vegetation or 100% water. (but that would be negative altitudes only)

Key point, while flying be sure the "sustain speed" is higher than stall speed at your current altitude or your altitude may move into the negative prior to reaching a higher speed... If you reach this point you've achieved maximum range.

Yo Ho!

With the original "lighter, more maneuverable, smaller-mouth" Block 5, 10 and 15 we could hold about .95 mach at 40K in mil power.

We could hold 1.1M using min burner, then mil power, then min burner to keep from going subsonic. This was a family model with a centerline tank. I think a clean A-model would hold 1.1M in mil once you got it there.

I used to show this to student-studly on the way home from Mountain Goat AFB. Kinda neat to cruise supersonic without using a lot of gas.

Gums sends ...
