Just wondering if anyone here has updated info regarding Wiki's minimal news about LM's feasibility study carried out (as of last year), with regards to potentially upgrading NASA's F-16XL to more modern specs?
I still see this as a plausible modern interceptor/strike platform for at least 15-20 years, with proper outfit of course..
One could conceive of such a super-Viper platform as viable competition for example, for RNoAF's anticipated 2010 fighter buy, given it's AESA/avionics potential, longer legs, high rate of climb and RNoAF's existing viper infrastructure?
Although, both advanced Gripen or EF tranche 3 would be valid selections overall.
But continued Viper+ sales couldn't hurt LM's industrial continuity in the interim either, between now and future F-35 production?
Just some thoughts, thanks. |

| Interesting idea since you could argue France's Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon were both inspired by the F-16XL. But I don't see Lockheed Martin doing anything so ambitious that might jeopardize their role in the F-35 or F-22. |

Considering the very high cost of the UAE blk60 jets, an XL variant with AESA would be approaching EF-2000 price (considering the R&D costs) so the aircraft you refer to are a better option in my point of view(or even Rafale or Su-XX).
Cheers. |
