"So there we were".......

My girlfriend and I were sitting at this really fancy restaurant, and as we get the check an air force major is franticly searching his pockets for his wallet, or cash wad, or some form of payment. he tells the waitress to come back in a minute while he calls his buddy for some money. next thing i know, the manager of the restaurant comes out and announces the major to the whole place and thanks him for his service. Then he shakes his hand and says his dinner is on the house.

The waitress happened to be mine as well and i opted to give her a little bigger tip than usual.

You know, what people do in the military really does have an effect on the way people act. Just makes you wonder what it'll take to stop all the gangs and violence on the streets and in schools.

Just before going to DS I got contacts. While in the desert and trying to take them out, on a cot, in the dark, with a flashlight, I lost one. Oh well.

When I got home, I went to get a new set. The doctor recommended the extended wear kind and I said I liked them but they were too expensive. Reviewing my records he saw that I didn't make my follow up appointment. I told that I couldn't because that was the we we deployed to Saudi.

He pulled a set of contacts out and I started the "show me you can put them in routine". At the same time he starts telling me that I can sleep in them and take a shower, but he warned me to not go swimming in them. I asked if they were the extended wear. When he told me they and I repeated that I couldn't pay for them and would get the regular ones.

He said, "These are on the house. Thank you for winning."

Just last memorial Day my wife and I were enjoying a meal at one of our local establishments when a woman I had never seen before walked over to our table and asked if I was a veteran. I told her, that I was indeed. She extended her hand and shook mine and thanked me for my service. she then proceeded to hand me a gift card to Walmart, which of course I tried to refuse but she insisted, then shook my hand and thanked me again. When I turned back to the table I could see my wifes eyes tearing up, she was wearing the biggest, proudest grin.
That was the most sincere thank you I have ever received in my life, also one of my proudest moments.

Whatever cities or towns you live in, I need to move there. Only twice in my 26 year career has anyone ever said thanks for your service to our country. The first one was in Seville Spain in Jan 91 (and I got the feeling it was not heart felt because they thought we were Army). The second time was when I was in uniform flying back from my second tour at Hahn in Mar 91 and I knew that was true thank you from the stewardess on the plane that I was flying on that day. I am retired in a small city in MN and work at a grocery store part time to make extra money for school. None of the people that I work with care about what I have done or had been during my long dedicated service to my country in the Air Force. All I hear is that 8 hour shifts are too tough and no one seems to follow the rules that were designed to make it a better store. When I follow the rule they look at me like some sort of outsider who has infiltrated their little club or group, so I will just continue to do it right and hopefully they will follow my lead.
