I am starting my search for civilian jobs doing egress or any mechanical job i could be hired for. does anyone have anything i can use to help my search?

Get a job with the Air National Guard as an egress tech. The civilian side of the guard is good paying and not full of the BS like the active duty.

I suggest you get your A and P license if you want to stay in the aviation industry or join the guard as a technician.
If you want to work as a civilian. You will need to get your AP License.
In the mean time. You can join a unit that has egress positions. But in most fighter units. The egress shop is one of the smallest. So it would be hard to get a Full time slot.
This is what I would do. Before you get out. Take some annual leave. Decide on a place you want to live. Go visit the local Guard or Reserve unit. Bypass the recruiter. And talk to people in the unit. Avionics, Weapons and Crew chiefs are the best bet. As they have most of the people in the unit. So the chance of getting hired full time is better.
Pick a job that is different from the one your currently doing. The reason to do something different? Free tech schools and Per Diem. If you go to Avionics school you will get paid almost a year of pay and per diem.
Since you’re already at Barksdale. Walk across the street and visit the Reserve guys at the 917th. Again stay away from the recruiters. Visit the shop chiefs. Join the unit. You may have to work man days for a while. But eventually you will get a full time position.

I'm in egress and in in the same position. Can you join the guard without a recruiter? If so, what's the advantage of just going to talk to the shop chiefs and joining?

He just means to stay away from recruiters because some of them will just try to put you where they need bodies, and if you let them sway you might regret it later. No you cant join the Guard without a recruiter, but it is a great idea to talk to the Shop. Its kinda your way to see if the boss and wrench benders are someone you could be happy working with. And regardless of what the manning document says the Shop Cheif has the best gouge on full time vaccancies.

Everyone keeps recommending the guard to me. Is it any better than the reserve as far as egress goes? The reserve in-service recruiter keeps saying that the guard is not as good of a deal. He says the reserve has 350/month more for college, less deployments and more people retire a msgt as opposed to retiring a tsgt in the guard. Btw I would be going into the guard in Florida or Alabama most likely. I see that Louisiana pay 100% tuition if you attend a Louisiana university. So this is another option, as long as it would allow me to pocket that extra GI Bill money. Any first hand experience here?
The listing of Egress openings is correct. But they are for traditional Reserve positions. Which is good if you can live on 200 dollars a month. And like I said. Egress and NDI have the smallest shops on base. If you want a fulltime job. Go Crew Chief, Weapons or Avionics. They have the most fulltime people. And the most turnover.
On the recruiter. You will eventually have to talk to them. But if you walk in off the street. They will tell you they only have openings in Security Forces.
See the shop chiefs‘. Get a feel for the units and shops. Then go see the recruiter. When he tells you they only have SF jobs. Give them your contact information. Then tell the shop chief. And he will work you in from his side.
As far as Guard versus Reserves. I have been in both. Traveling around the country working as a contractor. I have been in 3 Guard units and 2 Reserve. They are basically the same. Just a few differences. The guard is a little more flexible in scheduling. Where the Reserve wants you there on your assigned weekends.
A Guard and Reserve Fighter unit TDY’s are about the same. Plan on going to the big kitty litter box for 60 days every 18 months. This may be changing in the future. As some Guard and Reserve units lose there Fighters and go Predators. But you can almost count on going to your AEF.
Another difference is the retirement. In the guard you work for the state. So for me my Guard time doesn’t count toward my Service Comp date for my Federal civilian retirement.
My biggest problem was with the Guard. In the Reserve the President has to call you up. For say OEF or OIF. If the Governor needs guys for a couple of guys to do whatever. Like hand out water or put out fires. You can get activated at the drop of a hat.

It is a misconception that you need to have an A&P license to work in civilian field. If you can find a certified repair station you can work under their license. It works the same way as the airforce does... lower guys do the work ( just like 3 level and 5 levels do the work in the AF) then someone with a repairman certificate signs off the work under the shop license.... much like a 7 level. Don't get me wrong an A&P will greately enhance your chances of getting in the door but you might be able to find a place that will let you work under their certificate while you get your A&P. But even when you get your A&P you will sign stuff off under your shop certificate and not your A&P. You can also look jobs at some of the completion centers like savanah, montreal, dallas, or maybe even depot work in Jville. The only thing is most of that is under contract. Also keep in mind that most of these places require you to have your own common hand tools. And to be honest They are really expensive. craftsman or crapsman as I like to call it just doesnt cut it. so you are looking at another 3-5 grand easily to get set up with a good tool box. That is pretty much in any shop you go to you will need your own tools whether you are a contractor or work for a repair station. just some of my own experience to help with your decision. But I am Avionics not egress.

Man u got a sweet gig in the active air force. Egress or NDI is the shiite!! I should have crossed trained out of crew dawg and into one of those fields. And the bucks active duty makes today, whew!! Anyway do what you want--it was just a thought, and I mean no harm.
