I've only worked block 30's so can somebody explain the purpose of the WAR HUD (That's the one with the two combiner glass' right???) in the block 40? why is it oversized and why are there two combiner glass'.
Since we're talkin about avionics, I don't wanna hear someone's breakin OPSEC this and that, if you feel there is an OPSEC issuse don't post, or notify a mod to have the post magically disapear.
Thanks

Hello Racer,
The purpose of the over sized combiner glass on the Block 40 was to accommodate the video from the LANTIRN package, specifically the NAV pod.

You might like this picture...I also think there's more about it on this site if you look under LANTIRN

I thought that the block 30's hud raster display could also display LANTIRN/Litening/Sniper video. Am I wrong?
Perhaps the WAR HUD was needed at the time the 40s were built and the WAC people didn't get their raster video capability until several SCUs down the road.

Racer,
The WAR (wide angle reflective) HUD you are talking about was used for the NAVPOD as previously mentioned by Vader. It has a broader FOV which made it ideal for NAVPOD video, as depicted by the picture. The WAC (wide angle conventional) on the pre-block 40 AC is capable of displaying video from the NVP as well (as Sixer stated) but not with the same FOV as the WAR hud. I might be mistaken, but I don't think to many units out there fly the conventional NAV POD. I know when I was in the ROK the last time we got rid of them because the pilots didn't like to fly with them...it increased their drag coefficient.

Actually, WAR stands for Wide Angle Raster, not reflective.

What can be openly discussed about the Block 50 HUD? Are the capabilities of the new HUD's better or just different? Thanks

One of the main advantages of the WAR hud is that it has a large Instantaneous FOV, something like 30 x 18 degrees. This is much greater than the IFOV of the WAC HUD.

Different, and I can't say they are better..........they are really about the same. Only real difference is the software loaded into them.

The Block 50 HUD PDU is the same as the Block 30 and is not software driven. The program is kept either in the EU or ADS Card depending on block and whether or not CCIP is cw. In my opinion the WAR HUD is better because it has a nice resting place for the JG when you climb in and out of the cockpit.

Conventional A/B HUD is 13.5x9 IFOV, 20x20 TFOV
WAC HUD is 20x15 IFOV, 25x25 TFOV
WAR HUD is 30x17 IFOV, 20x30 TFOV
