They're actually called PASs now in AFI 21-101 (Protective Aircraft Shelter).

If you've ever been to Al Jaber in Kuwait you can see first hand what our bombs ( guided or unguided ) did to the French built units that the Iraqis took over during their invasion..in some places there were even still silhouettes (sp?) burned onto the walls where the guys didn't get out before the bombs went off..

The few left at Hahn are used to store hay.
We were trained to button up the HAS and hide. I always argued that hiding in a bullseye wasn't healthy and offered the tactic of taking cover in the ditch outside.

In reality, watching in Iraq to what our 117's were doing to the exact shelters we had proved my tactic to be correct.

The best place to protect your jets is in the air. But then, Eagles, Vipers and Hornet make that a losing proposition.

I know what you mean, our unit had a pair of M-60 tanks in the Gulf. Crawling through the turret and seeing just how thick the armor was my first thought was "Wow, you'd have to be pretty safe in here..." but seeing the tanks out around the base it was followed quickly by "...because everybody in the world is going to be aiming for you."
