LMTAS initiates activity on second F-2 production contract

April 20, 1998 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan has awarded Lockheed Martin a second major contract to continue manufacture and delivery of components for Japan's new support fighter, the F-2.
The contract covers work that Lockheed Martin began on April 1 in the production of components for an additional eight F-2 aircraft. The company s also producing components for 11 F-2 aircraft under the initial production contract received last year.

In Japan's defense procurement system, contracts are awarded annually to continue or expand work in ongoing projects. The Japan Defense Agency is continuing flight tests with four F-2 prototypes at Gifu Air Base in Japan.

Lockheed Martin will provide eight of 10 left-hand wing boxes, all the aft fuselages, all the wing leading-edge flaps, all the stores management sets, certain avionics support equipment, and other ground and on-board equipment for the 130 F-2 aircraft. All the F-2 aircraft will undergo final assembly at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Komaki South Plant in Nagoya, Japan.
