F-16s fly Southern & Northern Watch

April 30, 1998 (by Lieven Dewitte) - F-16s, pilots, aircraft maintainers and support personnel from the 419th FW at Hill AFB will deploy to South-West Asia in mid-May for two weeks. Saving fuel and trans-Atlantic wear on aircraft, Carswell crews (301st FW) will fly and maintain the Hill F-16s from early to mid-June.
Both units will fly Southern Watch missions. The 944th FW, Luke AFB, Ariz., and the 482nd FW, Homestead ARS, Fla., will also cut costs when they deploy reservists to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, to pick up Operation Northern Watch duties.

Luke and Homestead pilots will share aircraft from both units when they enforce the no-flyzone over northern Iraq May 6 to July 7. Luke pilots and support people will travel to Turkey in early May. Homestead's contingent will replace them in early June. Both units will send two deployment packages with swapout at the two-week point.
