22nd FS deploy as part of AEF 9/10

September 26, 2007 (by Scott Schonauer) - The last of more than 300 airmen from Spangdahlem Air Base left for the Middle East on Tuesday as part of a scheduled deployment.

Members of the 22nd Fighter Squadron make up the bulk of the deployed airmen from the Eifel region, said Iris Reiff, a spokeswoman for the 52nd Fighter Wing, the base’s host unit.

Airmen began leaving for deployment last weekend.

The F-16 squadron will remain at an undisclosed location in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility for about four months. The wing could not release the number of aircraft, the exact number of airmen or the exact location for security reasons, Reiff said.

In addition to the 22nd, many other units across the base are sending airmen as part of the deployment package, called Air Expeditionary Force 9/10. Since 1998, the Air Force has deployed airmen across the globe on a rotational basis of numbered Air Expeditionary Force packages. Airmen who deploy come from a cross section of units from across the Air Force.

Spangdahlem Air Base is home to about 14,000 Americans and has two F-16 squadrons and an A-10 squadron.
