122 Fighter Wing deploys to Iraq

September 13, 2007 (by Lieven Dewitte) - 200 members of the 122nd Fighter Wing left Fort Wayne yesterday to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The unit is part of the Indiana Air National Guard base located adjacent to Fort Wayne International Airport. Among those heading overseas are fighter pilots, maintenance personnel and support personel. The Airmen have been training for the past 4 months, conducting increased combat training flying scenarios.

Even though the fighter pilots fly some of the oldest F-16s in the Air Guard, the planes have been upgraded with the very latest avionics so they can handle all sorts of weather conditions while still having the ability to hit their targets.

The 122nd Fighter Wing has routinely been sent on overseas missions and has had a presence in Fort Wayne since the 1940's.

122nd Fighter Wing officials say the deployment will last a few months. End 2005, three Indiana ANG F-16 pilots were honored for their role in protecting soldiers on the ground in Iraq.
