Rafael to unveil new helmet for F-16s pilots

January 26, 2005 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Rafael developed a new helmet for combat pilots allowing the operation of weapons and armaments without the need to coordinate position sensing signals between the helmet and the signal processor box.
With this helmet, Rafael directly competes with Elbit System's Display And Sight Helmet (DASH).

The company will unveil the helmet at the upcoming Aero India Exhibition in Bangalore, to be held February 9-13, 2005.

The helmet, bearing the commercial name Eyeball, is equipped with mounted sights. A tiny camera follows the pilot's pupil and locks on-board weapons onto the pilot's line of sight. The helmet, developed by the company's missile division, provides displays to the pilot regardless of where he is looking.

Pilots in all types of fighter jets and helicopters will be able to use the helmet. The helmet has passed all development stages and was successfully tested by Israeli F-16 pilots.

The Rafael helmet has certain advantages over the Elbit helmet. Rafael's helmet is, at 1.3 kilograms, half the weight of Elbit's and unlike the Elbit model it does not require any integration between the helmet and the cockpit.

The price setting for the Rafael helmet will be between 50 and 75% of the competing Elbit helmet.
