USAF 79th FS mid-air collision accident report released

June 17, 2004 (by Anonymous) - The March 9th, 2004, mid-air collision over the Atlantic Ocean involving 2 F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 79th FS was attributed to pilot error, according to the accident report released by the US Air Force.
The collision took place during a Basic Fighter Maneuver (BFM) training mission over the Atlantic Ocean, about 35 miles southeast of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Both aircraft involved in the accident belonged to the 79th Fighter Squadron based at Shaw Air Force Base.

Both aircraft returned to Shaw AFB and landed safely. The pilots did not sustain any injuries. Total damage to the aircraft amounts to $208,000.

The accident report, released on June 15th cited improper task prioritization and channelized attention as main cause of the accident, leading to one pilot's failure to control the distance between the two aircraft.
